Hey, Let me ask you this first. Did it mounted successfully last time you plugged into the Mac. How do I use my WD Passport external hard drive?
Hey there, NikkiAngela! I'd suggest to try plugging the external in a different USB port on your Mac. You can even try with a different USB cable if you have a spare, just to see if it will get it recognized. Can you please tell does it show in Disk Utility on your Mac? Here's a link that will explain how to get there: If you do see it (on the left), I'd suggest to select it and then click on Repair Disk (on the right). Hope this was helpful!
Keep me posted! SuperSoph_WD hey! Yes it wasn't showing up on disk utility before. I also tried it on the other usb port but nothing. Thought it was my laptop can't power up the hard drive but thanks to your suggestion, i changed the usb cable and used a new one and its working perfectly now. Thank you very much! My WD hard drive don't show up on my macbook air, not even in disk utilities but shows up and works alright in my friend's macbook pro.
Done reformatting. Erased everything.
Again, you may have wished for some reason that they shipped with 3.18 or 4.x, but they shipped. Docker for mac kubernetes.

I tried to re-format to exFAT, repair, first aid etc. It kept saying '.could not be mounted'. I found that after I re-formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) it mounted, and after this I could format to exFAT again and now it would mount and work fine as an exFAT drive. Side note: I use my drives between PC and Mac, and I find that when I format to exFAT on the PC, OSX won't read it, but when I format to exFAT from OSX, it works fins across both platforms.
OP wrote: 'I will certainly do so once I get the data off- I have 10 issues of my magazine on it and I'm under deadline' Your first priority is to PROTECT THE DATA. I suggest you take the drive to ANOTHER MAC (not the one giving you problems). Can you get the drive mounted? Can you see the data?
Then, the next step is to attach ANOTHER DRIVE and 'copy over' the data. Once the data 'is safe', now it's time to 'go to work' on the drive. I suggest you follow the advice in reply #5 above: - GET RID of the proprietary WD software - ERASE the drive using Disk Utility (Mac OS extended with journaling enabled) - TEST the drive using DU's 'repair disk' button. What report do you get? - IF you get 'a good report' from DU after doing the above, REPEAT THE TEST FIVE TIMES in succession. Do you get a good report each and every time?
- IF SO, I'd continue using the drive.
